Searching Polk County Court Records
How do I search Polk County court records?
Use Iowa Courts Online, the state's official electronic docket. Public docket access is free and does not require an account. Search by case number or party name and narrow to Polk County where the system allows. For documents that are not online, visit a public access terminal at the courthouse where the case was filed. More detail is on the court records page.
Is Iowa Courts Online free?
Yes, for public docket access. The landing page says anyone with Internet access can view the public docket and that registration or subscription is not required. Making a payment on a case is also free to use. The one exception is city parking violations, which cannot be paid through Iowa Courts Online and must be paid to the city clerk instead.
Can I view actual court documents online?
Not always. Iowa Courts Online gives free access to the public docket, which is the index of filings and proceedings. Many full documents can only be viewed on a public access terminal at the courthouse in the county where the case was filed. The court dockets page explains the difference between a docket and the full file.
Who maintains Polk County court records?
The Clerk of District Court keeps court dockets and case files as part of the Iowa Judicial Branch. The Polk County Recorder handles marriage, vital, and real estate records, but the Recorder is not the court clerk for criminal, civil, divorce, probate, or traffic cases. For case-specific questions, Iowa Courts Online directs users to the clerk in the county where the case was filed. See the Clerk of District Court page for requests.

Marriage, Probate, and Public Records
Where do I get a Polk County marriage record?
Contact the Polk County Recorder's Vital Records Department at 515-286-3781 or visit 111 Court Avenue, Suite 250 in Des Moines. The Recorder issues marriage licenses and certified marriage copies. Divorce records, by contrast, come from the court. The marriage and divorce records page covers both.
Are divorce records public?
Divorce is a District Court case type, and docket information can be public. But financial details, the identifiers of minor children, protected addresses, and sealed documents can be restricted. So a docket may confirm a divorce while keeping the most sensitive papers out of view. See the marriage and divorce records page for more.
Does Polk County have a separate probate court?
No. Probate is a division and case type of the District Court under Iowa Code chapter 633, not a standalone county court. Estates, wills, guardianships, and conservatorships are searched on Iowa Courts Online and kept by the Clerk of District Court. The probate records page explains the process.
How do I file a public records request?
Identify which office holds the record, describe it clearly, and submit through that office's online center, mail, phone, or in person. Provide a contact so staff can quote the fee, since records are released after payment. The public records page covers Iowa's open-records law and the request steps.

How do I pay a Polk County fine?
Use the Iowa Courts Online payment feature or the Iowa Judicial Branch pay-a-fine resources. Making a payment is free to use and does not require registration. City parking violations are the exception and must be paid to the city clerk. The court dockets page explains how payments tie to a case.
Is there an active warrant search for Polk County?

Verify any warrant through the court or the Sheriff rather than a third-party site. The warrant records page explains where warrants appear.
What happens if I miss a court date?
Check Iowa Courts Online right away and contact an attorney or the Clerk of District Court. Missing court can lead to a bench warrant or affect your bond. Acting quickly is far better than waiting, since a warrant does not clear on its own. The warrant records page covers how to resolve a warrant tied to a missed date.
What do Polk County sheriff reports cost?
The Sheriff's published schedule charges $5 each for a police incident report, a vehicle accident report, a dispatch log, or an animal control report. Video, photos, and 911 audio are $35 each, and large requests can add hourly and per-page fees. The public records page lists the full fee schedule and request methods.
Are juvenile records public in Polk County?
Generally no. Iowa Code chapter 232 keeps most juvenile court records confidential, with access limited to parties, attorneys, agencies, and people the court approves. That is why juvenile matters do not show in a normal public docket search, even though they run through the same District Court. The court records page covers restricted records.
How do I get federal court records for this area?
Use PACER and CM/ECF for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, which covers Polk County. State court records are not in PACER, and federal records are not in Iowa Courts Online, so the two systems do not overlap. Bankruptcy and appeals for this area also have their own federal courts. The court records page outlines the federal versus state split.
